宾夕法尼亚切尼大学成立于1837年2月25日，是一所公立大学，它是美国历史上最早为非洲裔美国人提供教育的高等教育机构。几年来学校几经更名，依次是切尼教师培训学校(1914年)，切尼州立教师学院(1951年)，切尼州立学院(1959)，并最终命名为宾夕法尼亚切尼大学(切尼)(1983)。学校虽然历史悠久，但时刻准备为社会输送有人人才，在教学方法等发面处于领先水平。宾夕法尼亚切尼大学在2006美国新闻报大学排名中位于34名。
